The University of Patras was founded in the city of Patras in 1964. It is the third largest University in Greece.
The University of Patras has acquired international prominence for pioneering and innovative research in areas such as Environment, Health, Biotechnology, Mechanics, Electronics, Informatics and basic science. A number of its Departments, Laboratories and Clinics have been internationally designated as Centres of Excellence.
The Department of Civil Engineering, directly involved in the project, was founded in 1972; it consists of three Divisions covering the areas of Structural Engineering, Geotechnical and Hydraulic Engineering, and Environmental Engineering and Transportation Engineering.
The Department operates 8 laboratories for teaching and research. These are the Structural Engineering, Structural Materials, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Architectural Technology & Spatial Planning, and Surveying Laboratories. Computational facilities for research are attached to each of the eight laboratories.
University of Patras, project’s Lead Partner, has many years of experience in coordinating international projects; developing and adapting Information and Technological Systems, advanced technologies for safe and secure transport; realizing incident detection via machine vision, radar and GPS; using license plate recognition, network optimization and route choice guidance via machine vision and GPS; decoding high-accuracy vehicle location via GNSS; endorsing transport logistics and fleet management resulting in best practices for people and goods transportations; generating local and regional positive impacts on transports, user needs and tourism; always developing model design and implementation considering users’ evaluation and impact analysis.
